Packing for the Move

While AllHomesAz is here to help provide residents with quick cash for houses, the actual packing involved a move may not come so easily. Moving can be a strenuous transition, and we want to help you make this change as smoothly as possible. Here are some moving out tips.shutterstock_154243622

First, it is important to determine where to start without getting overwhelmed. Go through your house with large trash bags and throw away items that are no longer wanted. This helps declutter the home and provides a cleaner basis for packing.

Then, hit the fridge and pantry. Only pack nonperishables such as peanut butter, canned goods and cereals. Throw away expired items. If there is still a substantial amount of leftover fresh food, host a dinner party and share the love. This serves as a last shebang in the home! It both celebrates the house and brings friends and family together, all while cleaning out the kitchen.

Next is the actual packing. If you use boxes, categorize them by section: fragile, clothing, kitchenware, entertainment, etc. Essential packing supplies may include the following:

  • Tape
  • Marker (or labels)
  • Bubble wrap, paper towels or newspaper for padding
  • Sandwich bags
  • Box cutter

If you want to save on the bubble wrap and paper towels, use clothes such as cotton shirts and socks, or bring in the sheets and towels for padding. Additionally, if you do not want to worry about gathering boxes from work or a home improvement store, use laundry hampers, suitcases, large purses and other containers for your packing convenience. This saves on extra unnecessary supplies by using belongings that you already have.

If you do decide on boxes, however, there are several different ways to maintain order. Clear storage bins are great to visibly see items, but these can be a bit more expensive. So, for the old-fashioned cardboard boxes, here are some tips on organization.

  • Write on each box
  • Use label stickers
  • Color code
  • Number

When unpacking in your new home, these techniques should speed up the unloading process. Then, for items that are still in decent condition but you no longer want, consider giving them away. Place belongings such as old clothes, books, etc. in a “donate” box. You can even try to trade some of these items in for cash. Here are ways to make a little profit off of the belongings that you no longer want:

  • Bookmans (movies, CDs, books)
  • Buffalo Exchange (clothing, accessories, shoes)
  • eBay
  • Craigslist
  • Garage sale
  • Pawn shop
